DOHA, 15 December 2011 – Tarek Momen and Raneem
Elwelily secured bragging rights in Egyptian squash
after they won all-Egyptian finals to take gold at
Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex on
Friday.
In the men's final, Momen was up against clubmate
and training partner Karim Abdelgawad and the pair
produced a thrilling match befitting of a final. In
the end it was Momen who prevailed with a 3-2 (11-6,
9-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4) win.
Momen appeared to be in control after he won the
first set and then took the lead in the second.
However, with the possibility of a humiliating
three-set defeat on the cards, Abdelgawad dug deep
and fought back to take the lead.
World No. 20 Momen hit back and showed why he is
rated so highly as he regained his composure and won
the final two sets to take the gold.
Elwelily arrived in the final in determined mood to
improve on the bronze medal she won at the 2007 Arab
Games and she duly delivered by beating 2007 silver
medallist Omneya Abdelkawy 3-1 (7-11, 11-5, 11-2,
11-6).
The world No. 7 was rocked by Abdelkawy's strong
start, which allowed the world No. 20 to take the
first set. However, she worked her way back into the
match to win gold.
All four bronze medals were claimed by Kuwaitis.
Aisha Alhamad and Maryam Dashti claimed the women's,
while Abdullah Almezayen and Ali Alramezi secured
the bronze medals on offer in the men's competition. |
